Women’s Discover Oaxaca Village Stay

Explore the traditional farmlands at a relaxed touring pace.

This small group experience, limited to six women, is led by Mary Jane Gagnier, a longtime resident of Oaxaca. She authored “Oaxaca Celebration: Family, Food and Fiestas in Teotitlan¨, Museum of New Mexico Press, 2005, co-founded then managed Galería La Mano Magica for fifteen years, and since 2010 has been immersed in the natural world of Oaxaca. Whether birdwatching with binoculars, hiking on her own two feet or riding one of her dozen well-trained horses, Mary Jane is convinced that the more she delves into Oaxaca’s flora, fauna and sustainable agriculture, her understanding of the local culture and traditions  become infinitely richer. “That is very exciting! Each new layer of knowledge enhances the experience of life in this fascinating region of Mexico”.

The trails pass old haciendas.

Join Mary Jane for a week of open-air living at her small guest ranch in the foothills of the valley of Tlacolula. With just three spacious guest rooms, small groups are a given and safe-distance practices ( if needed ) are easy to observe.

This tour is for moderately-fit women accustomed to regular exercise. This is not bootcamp nor iron-woman week but participants should be comfortable partaking in up to 4 hours of moderate exercise per day. The two horse riding tours require no prior equestrian experience. Each morning will be spent either riding in the hills of the communal lands, cycling the pleasantly flat dirt roads of the traditional farmlands or walking ancient trails.

Join Mary Jane in the foothills of the Valle de Tlacolula.

After a fresh mid-day meal at Rancho Pitaya,  optional afternoon excursions include: visits to the homes of artisans, private gallery tour in Oaxaca’s historic center, a swim in the  private pool at Mary Jane’s Casa Murguia, visit to an exquisite colonial church and tour of a little-known archeological site.

Dinners are served al fresco at Rancho Pitaya that begin with sunset cocktails and end with desert under the stars.
