Overnight Discover Oaxaca Ride

Exotic native plants on the Tetecho trai

This overnight ride includes deluxe lodging at the eco-friendly Rancho Pitaya that was built with handmade adobe bricks, wild cane and thermal clay tile.  There is no other tour of the central valleys of Oaxaca that offers the variety of natural and cultural experiences in so short a time.

Upon arrival at Rancho Pitaya your guide gives a short demo of safe and useful riding tips. Helmets and half chaps are available. Each rider is assisted in mounting their horse and settling into a comfortable endurance saddle stowed with bottles of cold water and snacks. The guide carries a first aid kit but riders should bring with them any personal medication.

On a long canter in the valley

Within minutes of heading out from the ranch riders have ascended on ancient trails with expansive views of the great valley of Tlacolula and the Sierra Juarez. The vegetation changes quickly; massive yucca trees dot the landscape and soon the trail leads through a secret grove of old-growth organ cacti. These living sentinels can live to be over three hundreds years old and grow to over 10 meters tall. Ride by rare agaves, wild-harvested to make mezcal. Smell the refreshing aroma of native Bursera trees used for making incense.

Breathtaking vistas emerge over an ancient pass

The trails descend toward the Rio Salado where village farmers tend their crops with horse-drawn carts and cut the alfalfa with a scythe. Wild cane lines the banks of the river, a haven for birdlife.

The ride meanders in a big loop back to Rancho Pitaya where a delicious, freshly prepared meal awaits. After a day of discovering Oaxaca’s unique beauty on horseback, relax on the shady veranda with a fresh fruit cooler, ice cold beer or a mezcal margarita that the ranch is famous for.

Ride though forest of rare organ cacti

In the late afternoon choose between a visit to the 2,000 yr. old tree in nearby El Tule or join the ranch’s cook and learn to prepare authentic local specialties.

Dinner is served outdoors as the evening light illuminates the ancient native cacti preserved on the ranch. The air is fresh and clean. Sunrise is a spectacle not to be missed. Enjoy a complete breakfast in the warm morning sun.

On day two the ride explores the valley to the east with astoundingly distinct vegetation, geology and vistas from the day before. Traverse a geographically stunning pass and travel trails thousands of years old. Ride past massive candelabra cacti and over ancient stone bridges lined with rare wetlands.  This ride ends with an optional visit to a quiet pre-Hispanic archeological site. Leisurely lunch served at the ranch and return transportation to the city of Oaxaca around 4 p.m.
